WIFT Australia x CinefestOZ Writers’ Retreat

Established in 2021, the WIFT Australia x CinefestOZ Writers’ Retreat is a free program designed to support emerging and established screenwriters amongst the beautiful South West region of Western Australia.

Taking place this year from Friday 29 August to Wednesday 3 September 2025, the retreat provides participants with the space and time they need to further the development of a scripted screen project they are currently the Sole or Lead writer for.

Participants will also receive a complimentary pass to attend the two-day CinefestOZ Industry Program from Thursday 4 to Friday 5 September 2025. The CinefestOZ Industry Program is the festival’s annual professional conference consisting of workshops, events and networking drinks with industry guests.

This year, WIFT welcomes our new partner Minderoo Pictures whose support of the retreat has enabled us to engage Shay Spencer, Executive Producer at See-Saw Films’ Picking Scabs label as our Retreat Mentor. The partnership has also expanded the benefits to participants in this year’s program such as the cost of all interstate travel.

INTRODUCING THE 2025 COHORT

From a record-breaking 100 applications, five writers have been selected to take part in this year’s Writers Retreat to work on screen projects representing a diverse range of genres, subject matters, style and tone but all connected by the fact they feature a female protagonist.

  • Alicia Walsh

    NSW/Ex-WA

A seasoned writer and script editor originally from WA, whose past credits include many award-winning shorts as well as Dance Academy, Home and Away and Wonderland. Alicia writes scripts for and about women, including projects with social actors investigating adoption, domestic violence and public housing.

Alicia will use her experience to develop the second draft of her feature film set in her home state currently in development with a West Australian creative team during the retreat.

  • Jessica Londono

    WA

Jess is an emerging Colombian-Australian writer and director based in Perth.

Jess is channelling the solitude and strength of navigating motherhood away from the support of her family and cultural roots into her bold, emotionally charged sci-fi feature E-MUM, a haunting exploration of maternal love and artificial intelligence based on a proof of concept of the same name which has been nominated for this year’s Short Film Award at CinefestOZ Film Festival.

  • Hannah Lehmann

    NSW

Hannah is an award winning writer-director who joins the retreat with a strong background in digital and heightened storytelling, having created the hit Snap Originals series Two Sides which garnered over 1.2 million-subscribers, and comedy series The Unboxing for Seven Studios.

Hannah will use the retreat to work on her psychological thriller It's Probably Nothing! which follows a young woman who gradually realises she is being stalked by a shadowy creature as she attempts to walk from her car to her apartment, in a chilling reflection of gendered violence.

  • Madeleine Parry

    SA

Director of the Emmy and Peabody-award winning Netflix special Nanette, Madeleine has been a key creative on twelve commissioned projects, written and directed documentary and comedy for the ABC and SBS, and developed projects for Matchbox Pictures and Made Up Stories.

Maddy brings her signature blend of documentary insight and dramatic storytelling to her deeply personal Ελευθερία, a feature about a widowed Greek grandmother whose secret friendship with a refugee child rekindles her spirit and forces her to confront long-buried trauma.

  • Lou Sanz

    VIC

Lou is a writer-producer who’s debut feature Audrey premiered at SXSW (Grand Jury Competition) and the BFI London Film Festival, earning her a 2024 AWGIE Award nomination for Best Screenplay. A graduate of AFTRS, Lou is currently developing a slate of bold, emotionally charged projects under her banner Sanzipants, spanning dark comedy, drama, and genre-bending TV.

Lou will use the retreat to progress her pitch-black satire Auto Fiction which follows a failed novelist turned Uber driver who exploits tragic real-life stories for literary fame, spiralling into a dangerous game of “Who’s story is it anyway?”.
